Residential Security Checklist

- Are all exterior doors strong enough to withstand excessive force and secured with a deadbolt lock that has at minimum one-inch throw?
- Are all strike plates and frames for exterior doors anchored to the home's main construction?
- Do all exterior doors fit snugly against the frame, and are exterior hinges protected from being pried open?
- Are sliding glass doors and windows fitted with adequate locks to prevent them from being pried open, slid, or completely lifted out of the frame?
- Do you hide house keys in planters, in the mailbox, or under the doormat? Burglars know these tricks. Give a key to a trusted neighbor instead.
- Is there a wide-angled (180 degree) viewer or peephole on the main entrance door?
- Is your address posted on the front of your house and is it clearly visible from the street during the day and night?
- Have you installed motion sensitive floodlights to increase the security of your home year-round?
- Are all entrances to your home well lit at night (doors, windows, porches, etc.)?
- Are trees and shrubs trimmed to allow for visibility along the perimeter (particularly entries) of your home
- Are all ladders, tools or items that could be used to gain access to your home locked up and out of sight?
- Does your neighborhood have a neighborhood watch program? Are you involved?
- Have you had an officer from your local police department do a security evaluation of your home and yard?
- Do you have a monitored home security system?
