Tips For When You Are Out of Town
| |
- Arrange for a house-sitter to stay in your home during your absence.
- Install timers on indoor and outdoor lights, and put a radio or television on a timer to create the illusion of conversation in the house.
- Hire someone to mow the lawn during the spring or summer or shovel the walkway in the winter if it snows while you are away.
- Ask a neighbor to drive in and out of your driveway to make tracks in the snow if it snows while you are away to make it appear that someone is home.
- Lock all doors and windows when you leave, even if you have a home security system.
- Avoid leaving specific information about your plans on a phone answering machine.
- Leave a key with a trusted friend or neighbor.
- Before you leave on a trip, install a monitored home security system with stickers and signs clearly visible to would-be burglars.
- Arrange to have your newspapers and mail stopped while you are away or ask a neighbor to pick them up for you.
