Locks and Other Security Devices

- Consider investing in a home fire safe to help protect small valuables, important papers, heirlooms, etc. from fire and burglary. A fire safe is an excellent second line of defense in addition to a monitored home security and fire system.
- Do not rely on a chain across the door as a primary means of security. It can give a false sense of security and does not provide any substantial protection.
- Invest in good deadbolt locks and keep locks secure while you are home and away.
- Invest in a solid door. A hollow core or light duty door may not offer much resistance to forced entry.
- Engrave your driver's license number into valuables such as televisions, VCRs, etc.
- Be aware of the vulnerability of windows and doors. Evaluate the security of your home from the outside through the eyes of the burglar, and decide what areas need additional protection.
- Make a video inventory of your belongings, and keep it in a secure location off-site. Check with your insurance company for specific procedures.
